Debating And Public Speaking

For many learners, the skills honed in these codes are of great significance in their lives, their interpersonal relationships and most often, in their careers.

Debating

Pinetown Boys' High participates in the Durban Coastal Debating League (DCDL) at:
  • SENIOR LEAGUE LEVEL (Grades 11 & 12)
  • JUNIOR LEAGUE LEVEL (Grades 9 & 10)
  • GRADE 8 LEVEL

The fundamental tenet of Debating is to develop and convincingly communicate an argument. It requires research and excellent thinking skills. It also requires excellent teamwork as an argument must be successfully developed by 3 speakers. One must also be able to challenge the flaws in the opposition's argument. Many valuable skills are honed in this process.

Debating at PBHS

This occurs weekly to encourage learners to hone to above skills. The forum is more informal initially with the vision of formalising the skills and hosting interschool debates (on a friendly basis).

Public Speaking
  • Forum Discussions
A most valuable skill. Four learners research a topic - are given an aspect of that topic to discuss. They have 10 minutes to prepare their ideas and 10 minutes to speak. It encourages excellent listening skills. It also encourages great teamwork as each speaker must interact in total for about two and a half minutes during the 10 minutes. A great skill to hone.

  • Best Speaker Competition
(Grades 11 & 12)
Learners need to deliver a prepared speech (about 5min) on a topic of their choice and an impromptu speech (about 2min). A great opportunity to develop speaking communication skills.

  • Public Speaking at PBHS
This occurs weekly to encourage learners to develop their speaking skills (preparation, logical development of ideas and delivery). Most beneficial in their orals and in life beyond.
