STANDING FIRM AGAINST FIRM AGAINST BULLYING

PINETOWN Boys’ High School is standing firm against bullying, determined to stamp it out of the school system.
David Claassens, head of life orientation at the school, has initiated a anti-bullying programme, in conjunction with the School of Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.
On Thursday last week, Anil Bhagwanjee, director of health from the School of Psychology, and Sue Penning, a researcher and masters student at UKZN, were at the school, addressing staff on bullying - different types, how to recognise situations and how to deal with pupils, the victims and perpetrators.
"With diverse cultures in today’s schools, bullying is a concern and must be dealt with. Anil and Sue have done research and designed a programme specific to our school. As a school, we want to address the problem and put into action a prevention programme, with support from UKZN, Durban," said Claassens.
Penning spent a year on her research and highlighted the major areas of concern relating to the problem.
"Trauma is a huge issue and there is a relationship between this and bullying. Obviously, the more severe the bullying, the higher the trauma, which leads to anxiety and depression. With this programme, staff at Pinetown Boys’ High will be able to identify problem areas and have the skill to deal with varying scenarios," she said.
